I've just recently realized that one of the oddest episodes of my 2002 South Africa trip became a WH site. That time somebody from ZA convinced some Central European tour operators, that Durban could be an ideal holiday destination for the middle class of New Europe, who are much less safety sensitive - and much more price sensitive - than the Westerners. A Slovak charter airline - with the least creative name ever: Travel Service - launched a weekly service from Budapest to Durban - with Boeing737s, absolutely incapable of long-haul trips. We had two interim stops - in Aswan and Zanzibar - to refill the plane, during the 12-hour flight in seats designed for the Spanish Inquisition.

I visited Bijagos Archipelago in 2000 - though I did not put my feet on the ground of any of the islands. What I remember is the pure fear of death. That time a close friend of mine - a Hungarian communication expert - was the aide of Gambian president Jammeh. He invited a group of Central European journalists and businessmen to the Gambia, to write about the country and boost the business between Central Europe and Weast Africa. The highlight of the tour however was the one-day visit to Bissau Guinea financed by a local business tycoon (by the way of Lebanese origin). he chartered an old An 24, with a Russian crew, and we flew to Bissau

I gave one star, because the artefacts from al-Faw in the National Museum in Riyadh are really impressive, so MAYBE the site also has some value. But as for now -DO NOT GO THERE. Do not even try. My travel mates almost punched me there, but they were gentlemen. So how we did not visit al-Faw? During our Sausi trip, we saw the sculptures in the museum, which really looked interesting, and even some reconstructed parts of a shrine - all from al-Faw. I remembered the name from the tentative list. So I suggested to my friends, to take the longer road from Abha - so that we could stop at al-Faw and Himá. The road was loooooong. I tried to contact the saudi authorities to give some hint how to visit al-Faw, but they did not answer

Bač - to my surprise - is next year's candidate for the World Heritage List for Serbia. It was to be expected, as they already tried in 2023, but the very fact that this sleepy little town has been targeted for Serbian heritage protection agency is thought-provoking. There are many truly outstanding sites in the country, from Lepenski Vir to the synagogue in Subotica, that are not even on the tentative list. Bac is neither a tourist site nor a historically significant one. Quite frankly, I don't know why Tajikistan has this venue on its shortlist. The only spectacular monument - the large reclining Buddha - has been removed from here and is in the National Museum in Dushambe. Anyone can visit it there - the museum is interesting, by the way, and the price of the ticket includes a guided tour in English. There is virtually nothing on site. The road from Bokhtar is signposted and it's really not far. You have to cross a bridge over a small ditch to get to the site - there is no entrance fee, no guards, and not much to guard. They used to put up signs, which are now quite hard to read
